Think Like a Biologist Challenge

Share one idea. Get a full resource back.

Built by instructors. Shared freely with instructors. Designed to help students think like scientists.

Great biology teaching helps students do more than memorize facts. It helps them think like scientists by asking questions, examining evidence, interpreting data, and making thoughtful decisions even when the answer is not simple. This initiative invites Biology instructors to share one low-lift classroom activity that helps students practice those skills. It takes just a few minutes to submit, and no formal write-up is required. Together, those contributions will become a polished resource built by instructors, for instructors, and shared freely with the biology community and fully credited to each contributor. The complete guide will be shared over the summer, so you can bring new ideas directly into your fall courses

What This Is

This is not a traditional contest. It is a collaborative effort to surface and share practical teaching strategies that help students think more like scientists.

Each contribution adds to a high-quality, shareable activity guide filled with real classroom ideas that encourage curiosity, support evidence-based reasoning, and help students engage more deeply with biological concepts.

The final resource will be freely available to instructors. Every contribution will be credited to the instructor who shared it, including name, institution, and optionally a photo, so the community can learn from and recognize one another.

How It Works

1. Share one activity
Submit a simple classroom activity, assignment, or approach that helps students practice scientific thinking. This might mean analyzing data, questioning assumptions, interpreting evidence, or making sense of complex ideas. No formatting or formal write-up required, just share it the way you already use it!

2. Get it polished
You bring the idea. It gets transformed into a polished, classroom-ready resource. Each submission is reviewed, refined, and designed into a clear, classroom-ready format that highlights how it supports scientific thinking.

3. Build the resource together
All contributions are compiled into a cohesive, professionally designed guide that showcases a range of approaches to helping students think like scientists, with full credit given to each contributing instructor.

4. Get it back
Receive the full resource, including a polished version of your own activity, ready to use, adapt, and share. The complete guide will also be shared freely with instructors, extending the impact of your contribution. The complete guide will be shared over the summer, so you can bring new ideas directly into your fall courses.
