From Coursework to Workforce: Designing Learning That Builds Durable Skills

Friday, October 16 at 12pm ET

This is a free event, but seats may be limited.

As AI reshapes how work gets done, preparing students for the workforce requires more than technical knowledge alone. This webinar explores how higher education can intentionally build durable skills, including critical thinking, communication, collaboration, adaptability, judgment, and problem-solving, through the coursework students are already completing. The session offers a practical look at how learning experiences can create a clearer bridge between academic learning and the skills students will need to carry into an evolving workplace.

Dr. Blum earned her PhD in cell and molecular biology from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine where she studied HIV drug resistance. During her graduate program, she had the opportunity to TA an undergraduate course where she fell in love with teaching and learning. Naturally, being a science nerd, Jess set out to understand the scientific underpinnings of what techniques and strategies make teaching "good". To that end, she did a combined postdoc as both a research and HHMI teaching fellow where she learned all about evidence-based teaching and learning. Importantly, during this time Jess also learned how to teach others these methods as well. Fast forward to today where Dr. Blum has taken all that she's learned and experienced to lead the Foundational Curriculum team at the University of Minnesota Medical School as the Assistant Dean of Curriculum. As for her not-so-inner science nerd? She is alive and well, still looking over the edge of innovation and asking what's next...
