Covering All the Bases: Building a Course Schedule for a Co-Requisite Writing Class
1:00 PM - 1:45 PM
Presenters: Peter Adams
There is such a great deal that needs to be covered in a co-requisite writing class: all the material covered in a traditional first-year composition class, of course, but also, the material usually covered in a development writing course plus integrated reading. And then, the non-cognitive issues that derail so many students need to be addressed. In this presentation, Peter will suggest a strategy for building all this into a co-requisite course and will present several examples of successful course schedules.
Sneaky Strategies to Improve Student Success (Without Sacrificing Content)
2:00 PM - 2: 45 PM
Presenters: Melissa Long
Teaching corequisite courses can be daunting. Not only do we need to help students with reading, writing, and critical thinking (a task that is difficult in and of itself), but if we really want to see them succeed in academia, we also need to incorporate student skills, understanding expectations, and demystifying the unspoken rules of college into our curriculum. If you have struggled to find ways to teach them those strategies and behaviors in addition to the content of your course, come see how one English professor has developed and collected techniques to sneak them into her class structure and andragogy.

We Need a Bigger Tent: Using a Multi-faceted Approach to Bridging the Gap for Non-cognitive and Academic Issues: Resources, Relevance, and Reach
2:00 PM - 2:45 PM
Presenters: Alyce Thompson, Andrea Trapp
Cincinnati State Technical and Community College’s accelerated pathway course is structured as a standard ENG 101, plus 2 hours of additional “lab” practice weekly. To effectively address non-cognitive and academic issues experienced by students in this course, we have developed a multi-faceted approach that involves connecting students directly to campus resources, creating relevant activities and assignments to engage students in the college community, and reaching students where they are by constructing the course so that most of the developmental level work is front-loaded while collaborating with faculty in other departments in structuring their entry-level courses to align with the pace of 101A.
