Do you ever feel like you don’t have time to build the course you want? Even if you did have time, do you know where to start?

Co-founders of the Intro Psych Academy (IPA), Regan Gurung (Oregon State University) and Garth Neufeld (Cascadia College), are excited to share their educational expertise through this innovative experience. IPA is a one-day workshop that aims to remove the barriers that get in the way of your ideal curriculum by providing resources, training, and a framework for meaningful and effective course design.

The process is threefold:

    • Structured pre-meeting work
    • Hands-on in-person training
    • Ongoing support from our facilitators during a follow-up period

Kick off the event with a group dinner with Regan and Garth

Breakfast and Introduction: Build Something You Love

Join us for a light breakfast and introduction as we get the first annual IPA workshop kicked off.

Introductory psychology can and does serve many different purposes. There are many ‘right ways’ to teach the course. This opening session will review the key options in teaching the course and help you make sure the course aligns with your university needs, your personal philosophy of education, and an experience that you and your students will be passionate about.

In contrast to many prescriptions for course design, we believe the best place to start is with an examination of your own goals for the class that transcend grades and traditional modes of assessment. Introductory psychology can change lives. We take a close look at how.

Course Building (Modular Backward Design) 

This nuts and bolts session maps the different components of your course to your learning outcomes and provides you with different instructional methods, key techniques to be an inclusive teacher, and evidence-informed suggestions for the use of technology with a special consideration of AI.

Course Inspection (Quality and Utility)

Ensuring a quality learning experience and assessing course outcomes has many different components. This last session will ensure you have all the tools to assess the different components of the class from class, department, and university learning outcomes, to other significant indicators such as engagement.

Intro Psych Academy Co-Founders

Regan Gurung

Regan A. R. Gurung is Associate Vice Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Professor of Psychology at Oregon State University. He has taught Introductory Psychology for 25 years and served as chair of APA’s Strengthening Introductory Psychology Taskforce, member on the Assessing Introductory Psychology Taskforce, and most recently, as co-Chair of the Introductory Psychology Initiative. He is past APA Council of Representatives members, and served as the college representative to Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools (TOPSS) and the Committee on Associate and Baccalaureate Education (CABE). He is past President of the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP, APA DIV 2), and of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in psychology, and is a Fellow of APA and APS. He has published over 140 peer reviewed research articles and authored, co-authored, edited, and co-edited 15 books, most recently Study Like a Champ (with Dunlosky), Everyday Applications of Psychological Science (with Landrum, Dunn, Nolan, and McCarthy), and Thriving in Academia (with Ansburg and Basham). Regan was awarded the American Psychological Foundations Charles L. Brewer Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology with numerous local and state teaching and scholarship awards.

Garth Neufeld

Garth Neufeld, professor of psychology and chair of Social Sciences at Cascadia College, is passionate about producing experiences that improve the personal and professional lives of others. He has founded or co-founded many teaching-related projects including Teaching Introductory Psychology Northwest, the PsychSessions Podcast, and Intro Psych Coast-to-Coast. He has served the national teaching of psychology community through various leadership roles through the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (STP), the AP Psychology Reading, and APA’s Educational Directorate. He is the recipient of the STP (APA Div. 2) 2019 Wayne Weiten Teaching Excellence Award. In 2018, Garth was awarded a Citizen Psychologist presidential citation from the APA for co-founding Shared Space For All (www.sharedspaceforall.com), an organization that educates and mentors the most at-risk children in Thailand toward the prevention of sex work and trafficking. For these efforts, Garth received APA’s International Humanitarian Award in 2023.
