Introduction

For instructors, the goal is not just to help students see the beauty of their discipline, but also to help prepare students for their lives in the wider world. Students benefit when they see how skills and content they are learning in the classroom might be applied in their jobs and in their lives. In higher education, there is an increased connection between the classroom and students' future careers.

Kevin Revell is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Murray State University. After working for several years in the pharmaceutical industry, he completed his Ph.D. in chemistry in 2006 (University of South Florida), and joined the Murray State faculty in the same year. His research has spanned medicinal chemistry (synthesis and mode of action of antibacterial compounds), materials chemistry (synthesis and characterization of organic semiconductors), and chemical education (curriculum, technology-enhanced pedagogy, and active-learning design). He has served as the assistant dean of the Jones College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at MSU (2013-2019) and as chemistry department chair (2018-2020). Dr. Revell is the author of Introductory Chemistry, published by Macmillan Learning.

Stacey Cochran is an Assistant Professor researching innovative teaching practices centered on writing and well-being at the University of Arizona, with dual appointments in English and the office of Student Success and Retention Innovation. He has also served as the Coordinator of Student Success and Wellness in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. His bestselling novel Eddie & Sunny was adapted as a major motion picture in 2021 by Paradox Studios US and Iervolino Entertainment. He was a finalist for the 1998 Dell Magazines Award, a finalist for the 2004 St. Martin's Press/PWA Best First Private Eye Novel Contest, and finalist for the 2011 James Hurst Prize for fiction.

Why Connect University to Career?

Students are bombarded daily with so many competing interests and demands on their mental bandwidth. Therefore, students consciously and subconsciously ask themselves, “Is this important to me? Does this matter?” If we want students to engage with the course, instructors need to keep this in mind so that the class is impactful to students.

Not all courses are in a student’s content area or degree focus. Students who take the course because it relates to their major come to class with very different expectations and desires than students who are fulfilling a basic requirement for the degree.

For example, a Chemistry major comes to class with a previous interest in chemistry because they chose this for their major. They understand how the theories learned will be needed and put into practice in their career. Yet other students do not understand why they must take a chemistry class if their major appears to have no relation to chemistry or science at all. However, if the teacher considers the core concepts behind the specific content, they will see skills that can be used in any career. For instance, in chemistry, students learn symbolic reasoning. They are presented with an abstract concept, then need to construct a model and then think about what will happen, and ultimately represent this symbolically. This process is used in many careers, not just those requiring chemistry.

If instructors approach their course thinking, “What do the students need to walk out of this classroom knowing how to do?” They will ultimately motivate students to seek the information they need, which is traditionally a challenge.

The Role of Technology

Ask students to talk about where they come from

For example, in a general education English course, have students write a letter to someone towards whom they feel gratitude. Then, students need to read the letter to the person to which it is written. Students are asked to assess how they feel being vulnerable and how the person reacts to the letter. How can they make value from this? Students cite this exercise as being transformational for them because they learn to connect with people and they also learn what has made a positive impact on their lives to date.

Discuss harmonious passions and motivations

Also, in an English or College Success course, have students assess what motivates them. When we are motivated by extrinsic motivators, such as grades, those things can be unstable. But if we are doing something for intrinsic reasons and want to incorporate this knowledge into our identity, their motivation will be sustained.

WRITE down wishes and consider them goals. Do this regularly. What is the OUTCOME of achieving your goals, particularly emotional effects? What are the OBSTACLES that reside within the individual that might prevent them from achieving the goal? PLAN how to overcome the obstacles. When students start, many of their goals are just “pass this class” or “get an A” but as time and trust between and among the teacher and students grows, the goals become more introspective and specific. Students are much more likely to sustain their goals if they are personal.

Incorporate career services into the classroom content

Teaching students about the job responsibilities and the work environment allows them to better tap into their strengths and desires. If career services can provide professional speakers, the speakers can visit class and talk to students about how they work and provide practical examples. Another option is to have a career conversation at the end of the semester. Ask students their interests and passions in person. This helps students feel seen, and this leads to less attrition.

Use visuals and current events

People are drawn to stories, so photos and videos are attractive to students. Showing students current news or current events that relate to their classwork is extremely effective. The world is at our fingertips, so using technology to incorporate visuals into a class can really make students perk up and take note. Sometimes seeing something makes it interesting and feel applicable to the real world.

Streamline technology use through course organisation

If instructors can streamline the technology process in any way, so that materials and technology tools are all together in an LMS, this allows teachers to organise and show connections between theory and practice in a clear manner. Pedagogy should drive technology, not the other way around.
